    Here's a classic riff from Savatage's Hall Of The Mountain King album "24 Hours Ago."
    The guitarist is of course the late great Criss Oliva and the riffs are massively cool as always.
    Make sure and tune down one full step to play along (D standard). All of the early Savatage material was in this tuning. The riffs should be fairly easy to play note wise, but make sure to listen closely to the articulations. Criss's rhythm playing is an art form in itself, well worth studying!
    Rock On!

    To me, this song really defines Criss as a player! Some awesome licks throughout the song, especially the lick at the end

    This is awesome, thanks Nick. Can't go wrong with pretty much anything off of the Criss Oliva albums. Dungeons are Calling, City Beneath the Surface, Sirens, so many to choose from.

    Oh man thank you. I was literally just starting yesterday to try to work this out on my own. I even worked out at the gym to this song today. I'm learning guitar rather late in life (let's just say I was a teenager when this song came out but have have only been playing guitar for four years). I enjoyed in your other vid where you mentioned a girlfriend with mix tape that had both Savatage and Metal Church because I guarantee I had those two mixed back then as well.
    Just came across your channel but really appreciate your teaching style. You get right into it without a lot of talking but then also take time to explain all the important details, and your playing is inspiring. And honestly I haven't found many folks covering Savatage so it fills in an important gap.
    P.S. Just checked out your web site and noticed your courses. Just bought the 80s metal course! Probably a bit advanced for me, but exactly the genre I want to get better in.

    Thanks Nick!!! Another killer tune from Savatage... any chance you will do a tutorial on the lead fills he does during the main riffs? or even the main solo? I would love to see those too... Thanks again! You rock!!!

      @tihmtahm 3 года назад

      @@NickLaytonGuitar I have a question for you... just in case you do plan to do the lead stuff for this song... Is the lead guitar also tuned down a step or is the lead in standard? I ask because when I try playing that first lead run, it sounds too low when I'm playing a full step down...

    • @NickLaytonGuitar
      @NickLaytonGuitar  3 года назад +1

      @@tihmtahm I'm not sure actually...I'll have to investigate! 😃

    • @tihmtahm
      @tihmtahm 3 года назад

      @@NickLaytonGuitar I appreciate that... I asked because I can envision playing part of the rhythm and then going into the lead and going back and forth like that.. but if they're tuned differently, that changes everything... unless tuning in between is an option... or playing the lead parts up a step...
